Don’t visit A&E with minor illness and injury - go to your local Minor Injury Unit instead

Date: 23 January 2018

Patients are being urged to “choose well” by taking their minor injuries to Somerset’s seven Minor Injury Units instead of queuing at busy A&E departments.

Somerset’s Minor Injuries Service is provided by Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, and offers a seven day service. The average wait is 2 hours though patients are seen quicker in off-peak times.

Somerset Partnership runs seven MIUs across the county and they see and treat more than 100,000 people every year.

The minor injury units are based at:

MIU staff treat a range of minor injuries including:

• sprains and strains
• minor broken bones
• minor cuts
• burns and scalds
• minor head injuries
• insect and animal bites
• eye complaints and infections
• dental pain
• emergency contraception.

The service can also see other minor complaints and can prescribe appropriate medicines. However they cannot supply repeat prescriptions - if patients need repeat medicines over the holiday period they should contact their surgery in good time.
