Have your say on staffing community hospitals in Somerset

Date: 15 January 2018

This consultation is now closed.

A report of the consultation findings will be published here by 6 February 2018.

In September 2017, we temporarily closed an inpatient ward at Dene Barton Community Hospital as we needed to move nurses to Williton Community Hospital to support opening more stroke beds.  (An inpatient ward is a hospital ward with beds for patients to stay overnight.)

In October 2017 we temporarily closed the inpatient wards at Chard and Shepton Mallet Community Hospitals. These wards were closed as a matter of patient safety. This was because of a significant shortage of nurses within our community hospitals.

We will be reviewing this decision regularly over the next few months.  We have committed to undertaking a formal review at our Board meeting on 6 February 2018.  At that Board meeting we will consider whether we can re-open the wards (which is our preferred option), or, if not, whether we have to continue with the current temporary closures or whether to take different actions to ensure we can run our wards safely.
