Psychiatric liaison – Building a bridge between physical and mental health

Date: 16 May 2019

For Mental Health Awareness Week this week, we have been shining the spotlight on just some of the fantastic services we have in place for mental health, and the treatments they can provide.

Most patients will be seen directly by one of our dedicated mental health teams, however, what happens when a patient has already been admitted to a general hospital, and is in need of mental health support?

Our psychiatric liaison team works closely with acute hospitals, including Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil Hospital, as well as the community hospitals across the county, to provide support to patients already in a hospital.

This bridge between the hospitals and the mental health services enables better treatment for patients, and the team can assist in the assessment and discharge planning of a patient with mental health problems.

Our clinical team manager on the psychiatric liaison team, Paul Chrichard, explains how the service works and the type of care it can provide to people with mental health problems, in the video below.
