Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Service (MSk)

MSk 300The MSk Physiotherapy Service offers a service to adults and children aged 11 years and above, who may have an orthopaedic, musculoskeletal or sports injury related problem.  The service does not see patients with neurological, respiratory or rehabilitation based problems such as falls.

Who we are

  • Chartered Physiotherapists who are registered with the Health Professions Council
  • Physiotherapy Assistants (Technical Instructors) working under the supervision of the Chartered Physiotherapists
  • Students from local universities

What we do

All staff are trained in the assessment and management of musculoskeletal disorders. The service also has a number of experienced clinicians who are able to offer specialist advice and treatment in the management of continence problems, arthritis, vertigo, pain and sports injuries.

All the traditional physiotherapy methods of treatment are available such as mobilisations, manipulation and exercise.  In addition a large number of staff have undertaken post graduate courses to be able to offer other modalities of treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy and injection therapy.

How we work

The philosophy of care within the service is based on the bio-psychosocial model, screening for a pathological cause for symptoms and discussing appropriate intervention.  Where this is not indicated, patients are given information and support to help them self manage their musculoskeletal condition.

Patients normally receive a 40 minute assessment at their first appointment to identify their main problems and define their expectations from physiotherapy treatment. Following assessment a diagnosis and explanation of this is discussed with the patient along with an agreed management plan.

The service is closely linked to its sister service the Orthopaedic Assessment Service (Interface Service), whereby staff are able to access second opinions from experienced colleagues.  They are also able to refer patients directly to this service for further investigations ie x-rays, MRI scans when appropriate.

How you can access these services

Patients are referred to the service by their GP, consultant or other health care professional. Patients are seen in a variety of locations, including community hospital sites, clinics and GP surgeries.
