Erosion is the dissolving away of teeth caused by acid. This acid can come from the food and drink you consume or can be produced by your own body. Erosion can cause sensitivity. A sensitive toothpaste can help and also some applications that can be provided at the dentist. Sometimes the tooth wear can become so severe that the nerve becomes exposed and root canal treatment and or fillings are needed.
Usually erosion is caused by food and drink. To avoid erosion of the teeth you should limit your consumption of the following:
- Fruit juice
- Fizzy drinks, including sports drinks
- Acidic fruit such as oranges, lemons or limes
Stomach acid can also cause erosion (wear) of the teeth. Normally stomach acid does not reach the teeth, unless you suffer with acid reflux or bulimia. Please contact your doctor if you believe you suffer with either of these.
