Application of fluoride
"Delivering Better Oral Health” is produced by the Department of Health and is an evidence based toolkit for prevention of dental disease.
Every dental practitioner has been provided with this toolkit. It advises that every child dental patient from 3 years of age, as well as vulnerable adult patients, should have fluoride varnish applied to their teeth twice a year.
The fluoride varnish application helps to prevent tooth decay.
The fluoride varnish is easy to apply and is painted onto the teeth using a small brush. A film of varnish sticks to the teeth and the fluoride becomes incorporated into the tooth substance, making them less likely to decay.
Those patients who are likely to develop decay (holes in the teeth) should have the fluoride applied four times a year.
