Somerset Autism Spectrum Service
Who We Are
We are a specialist NHS team made up of Clinical Psychologists and Autism Practitioners.
We assess people 18 years of age and over who are referred by their GP, to identify if Autism Spectrum Disorder is present or not.
What is an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?
Research suggests that there is no one cause of autism, and that it develops from a combination of genetic and non-genetic, or environmental, influences.
However, people with ASD will all have very persistent difficulties/differences with social communication; social interaction; and restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities.
In addition, the difficulties must cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of current functioning to warrant a formal diagnosis of ASD, as specified within the DSM-5 criteria for ASD.
Referrals to Somerset Autism Spectrum Service
The SASS referral form must be completed by your GP using our standard referral form, unless you are staying on one of our inpatient wards, in which case the ward will refer you directly. For more information about referrals please see our Referral Guidance page.
