Mental Health Service Transformation

This is an exciting time to be working in mental health services in Somerset.

Our Trust is working with our patients, our commissioners at Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group, the voluntary sector and NHS England, to transform services for adults. Over the next three years, we will be investing more into community-based adult mental health care, giving patients faster and easier access to local services.

Our plans have been developed in partnership with patients with lived experience of mental ill-health and Somerset's mental health services. It’s the best way we can make sure our services continue to grow and meet the county’s changing needs.

The transformation includes removing the traditional boundaries between mental health services and GP services with a single point of access to help us match patients with the right level of care.

We work on the philosophy of ‘no wrong door’ for accessing services, based upon the i-THRIVE principles of promoting coping skills, and providing the right level of support:

  • Coping – promoting strengths and resilience in communities and neighbourhoods
  • Getting some support – improved access to support and treatment in GP services
  • Getting more support -  closer working between specialist mental health, GP practices and neighbourhood services
  • Risk assessment and management – for those with more severe problems who need community mental health and inpatient services.
